Zardari reposes ‘full confidence’ in ECP for free, fair polls

  • Says PPP prepared to emerge as majority party in upcoming general elections
  • Says PPP only political party having ability to contest elections in any environment

KARACHI: Former president Asif Ali Zardari said on Sunday declared that the Pakistan People’s Party was fully prepared for the upcoming general elections, reposing his ‘full confidence’ in the election commission that it will ensure free, fair and transparent elections in the country.

The PPP co-chairman said that the country is moving towards transparent elections and the PPP is fully prepared for it.

“I have full confidence in the Election Commission that it will conduct a transparent election”, Asif Zardari said in a statement issued by the party secretariat here Sunday.

Zardari, who has been co-chairman of the PPP, claimed that the People’s Party has been the only political party of the country with ability to contest elections in any environment.

He hoped that the PPP will emerge as the majority party in elections on Feb 08.

He was opined that a conducive atmosphere prevails in the country and stressed for holding elections at fixed time.

“I am sure that on February 8, the PPP will emerge as the majority party of the country”, he said. The environment of the country is currently conducive for elections which should be held on time, he concluded.

The Election Commission of Pakistan has announced that the general elections will be held in the country on February 08 next year.

Yesterday the envoys of the UK and the United States called on leaders of various political parties, including the PPP and PML-N, to seek their input about the prospects for polls and their concerns about electioneering.

UK High Commissioner Jane Marriott met PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari in Karachi, days after a similar meeting with Nawaz Sharif in Lahore.

Separately, US Ambassador Donald Blome while held a meeting with PPP leader Yousaf Raza Gilani in Multan, he also met former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party leader Jahangir Khan Tareen in Lahore.

It seems that Zardari, the former president, is confident in the PPP’s preparedness for the upcoming elections, expressing certainty in the party’s victory on Feb 8. His recent meeting with UK High Commissioner Jane Marriott at Bilawal House in Karachi indicates a keen interest from foreign delegates in understanding the PPP’s stance and strategy for the upcoming national elections.

The party has expressed concerns about a level playing field in the run-up to the polls, particularly highlighting the perceived advantage of another party. Additionally, discussions with US envoy Donald Blome focused on the political landscape of south Punjab in relation to the upcoming elections.

It appears that the PPP is gearing up for the elections and is actively engaging with foreign envoys to convey their position and concerns.
