Senator Prince Omar’s tribal jirga resolves Balochistan’s biggest tribal feud  

QUETTA: A Tribal Shahi Jirga headed by Senator Prince Omar Ahmedzai held royal court and resolved a 20-year-old tribal feud that claimed 15 lives from Lehri and Abro tribes of Balochistan Province.

Senator Prince Omar Ahmedzai carries the legacy of his grandfather Khan of Qalat His Highness Mir Ahmed Yar Khan who had signed document of succession. It was also the then Governor Balochistan Nawab Mir Ahmed Yar Khan in 1976 who had launched a campaign on the request of the then PM Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to bring an end to the Baloch militancy by convincing the then militant leaders Munir Mengal, Agha Salman Ahmedzai and Aslam Gichki to lay down arms and also persuaded Khair Baksh Marri to end militancy.

The feud was 20 year-old which claimed ives of 15 innocent people from both the sides. Abro and Lehri tribes are scattered in across Balochistan to Sindh provinces and both the tribes had locked horns over territorial dispute. Later, the conflict got a new turn as both sides starting killing innocent people from both sides.

According to the details, Senator Prince Omar Ahmedzai led a tribal jirga to Kachhi and held separate meetings with tribal leaders Javed Aziz Khan Lehri and Sardar Abdullah Khan Abro and convinced both of them on one-month-long ceasefire.

Later, the jirga held the royal court to resolve the tribal feud between both Lehri and Abro tribes and after several rounds of talks, both the tribes surrendered to the decree of the jirga led by Senator Prince Omar Ahmedzai.

According to the decree, the jirga has revived the distribution of land between both the tribes in accordance to the revenue record of 1959.

According to the judgement, a copy is available with daily Pakistan Today, Lehri tribe would get 971 acres of land while Abro tribe would get 1166 acres of land. The judgement also decided that Shamilaat of the area would also be distributed between both tribes in accordance with the revenue record.

The jirga also decided to impose 1.5 crore rupees fine on Abro tribe as diyat for 10 murders of Lehri tribe while the Abro tribe would get 75 lac rupees as diyat for its five dead. Moreover, Lehri tribe would get another 67 lac rupees as compensation for its injured men while Abro tribe would get 64 lac rupees as compensation for its injured.

Both tribes have also been directed to withdraw their court cases and resolve their territorial disputed according to jirga decree. Any violation would be dealt strictly by the jirga and the violating party would be imposed one crore rupee fine.

The tribal chiefs and people of Balochistan have lauded Senator Omar Ahmedzai for his effort to bring back normalcy in the area and resolve old tribal feud that has claimed at least 15 innocent lives.

Talking to Pakistan Today, Senator Prince Omar said that the jirga decree would go a long way in bringing peace and tranquility in across both the provinces. Elabourating, Senator Prince Omar said that both the tribes had moved to the hills and were fighting for the past 20 years.

He said that jirga made a decree based on justice and equality ensuring respect and security of both the tribes.

“The just decree has been welcomes not only by both the tribes but people from across Balochistan and Sindh. This has not only ended the feud but also it has brought both the tribes back to the mainstream. I am on a mission to resolve all tribal feuds as return of peace would not only help speedup development process in the province but also would discourage militancy and terrorism,” he concluded.
