ISLAMABAD: The caretaker federal government has initiated the process of bringing back former federal minister Chaudhry Moonis Elahi through Interpol.
According to media reports, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has been collaborating with the caretaker government to gather all relevant information regarding Moonis Elahi’s cases. The caretaker Punjab government has provided the FIA with the necessary details, which have subsequently been shared with Interpol.
The authorities have also identified and frozen eight of Moonis Elahi’s bank accounts in Lahore, where over Rs487.6 million were transferred. However, the former minister has reportedly withdrawn all funds from these accounts.
Six properties belonging to Moonis Elahi have also been frozen, five in Kasur and one in Rawalpindi. These actions stem from the accountability court’s decision to declare Moonis Elahi an absconder in a money laundering case and freeze all his bank accounts.
The court had previously issued a bailable arrest warrant for Moonis Elahi, but the FIA’s attempts to execute it were unsuccessful. As a result, a non-bailable arrest warrant has now been issued for his apprehension.
The caretaker government’s actions highlight its commitment to addressing corruption and bringing those accused of wrongdoing to justice. Interpol’s involvement is expected to expedite the process of bringing Moonis Elahi back to Pakistan to face the charges against him.
