Society responsible to take care of persons with special abilities: Dr Khalid

LAHORE: Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood has said that every member of the society should play an active role for the rights of children with special abilities.

He was addressing an event to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Al Raazi Hall organized by Punjab University Child Welfare Centre at Al Raazi Hall here on Thursday.

Principal Child Welfare Center Dr Ayesha Wajihullah, Director Institute of Special Education Prof Dr Humera Bano, faculty members and special children along with their parents were present on the occasion.

Addressing the participants, Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood said that it was the responsibility of the society including parents and teachers to take care of the physical, psychological, educational and nutritional needs of people with special abilities.

He said that it was very important to understand that every human being was different in terms of abilities. He said the parents of special children were playing role in fulfilling the objectives of highlighting their children’s importance in the society.

The PU VC said that children with special abilities should be given more attention instead of ignoring them as punishment or misfortune. He said that PU CWC is playing a commendable role for providing excellent training to children with special needs despite limited resources.

Dr Ayesha Wajihullah said that the purpose of marking this day was to create awareness about the challenges faced by people with special abilities. She said that Punjab University Child Welfare Center will continue to play its role for the rehabilitation of children with special abilities.

During the event, special children presented a tableau to express solidarity with Palestinian Muslims and received a standing ovation from the audience.
