Death toll climbs to 10 in bus attack

CHILAS: Another injured of the deadly gun attack on Chilas bus has succumbed to his injuries raising the death toll to 10 in Saturday’s terror hit, hospital sources said on Wednesday.

Nine people, including two soldiers, lost their lives, and 25 passengers received injuries when unknown gunmen opened fire on the Rawalpindi-bound bus from nearby hills in Chilas, causing the vehicle to collide with a goods truck.

The conductor of the truck breathed his last now taking the death toll to 10.

Gilgit Baltistan Home Minister Shams Lone said the driver of the bus panicked following the shooting and accelerated the speed which led to its head-on collision with the truck.

The police said the man – identified as truck conductor – was undergoing treatment at Abbottabad complex, but could not survive.

Furthermore, the police said two, including a woman, out of 25 injured citizens were in serious condition. The injured woman was shifted to Gilgit Hospital in critical condition, they added.

Meanwhile, a joint investigation team (JIT) has been constituted to probe the terrorist attack on the passenger bus in Chilas.

The police and security forces have detained around one and a half dozen suspects – which are being interrogated by the investigation team.
