The shadow of the disappeared

Looking for answers

As we keep holding on for our loved ones, with the hope that they will come home, whether it’s today or tomorrow, the glimmer of that hope fades when we learn that one of our people has fallen. There’s a courageous woman, fighting for everyone today, standing strong in the face of adversity, Mahrang.

Balochistan has been plagued by suffering for decades as families long for their loved ones. The Baloch Long March, a largely unreported movement, has been making waves as thousands of ethnic Baloch come together to demand justice for the disappeared and victims of enforced disappearances. Led by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee, this remarkable journey from southern Balochistan to Islamabad has received a warm welcome along the way, with videos on social media showcasing the immense support and solidarity from the Baloch community.

Mahrang Baloch, a leader of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee, has played a pivotal role in organizing the march. Her personal experience of her father’s abduction in 2009, followed by the discovery of his tortured body in 2011, has fueled her activism and determination to seek justice. Mahrang’s story is a testament to the resilience and strength of the Baloch community in their fight against enforced disappearances.

One of the main reasons behind the Baloch Long March is the heartbreaking death of Balaach Mola Bakhsh. His family believes that he was abducted and killed in a fake encounter, challenging the official claim that he was arrested with explosives. This incident has deeply impacted his family and motivated them to seek justice.

The Baloch Long March stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, determination, and the quest for justice. The participants, led by individuals like Mahrang Baloch, have shown immense courage in their fight against enforced disappearances. As the movement gains momentum and garners international support, it is hoped that their demands for justice and accountability will be heard, bringing solace to the families who have long awaited answers

The marchers embarked on a journey towards Islamabad, facing numerous obstacles along the way. Despite being blocked from entering the capital, they have received overwhelming support from thousands of ethnic Baloch in different cities. This solidarity highlights the urgency of addressing the issue of enforced disappearances and the need for justice.

During the Baloch Long March, the protesters have been making stops in various cities to raise awareness about enforced disappearances. They also aim to register families of the victims, ensuring their voices are heard and their stories are documented. This step is crucial in the pursuit of justice and accountability.

The marchers have put forth several demands to address the issue of enforced disappearances. They call for the release of those who have been disappeared, as well as the disarming of the Counter Terrorism Department to prevent future abductions and fake encounters. These demands highlight the need for systemic changes to protect the rights and lives of the Baloch people.

The Baloch Long March has gained international attention, with activists and human rights organizations expressing solidarity with the cause. The movement has also received support from various countries, urging the Pakistani government to address the issue of enforced disappearances and ensure justice for the affected families.

Social media platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook, have played a crucial role in spreading awareness about the Baloch Long March. Activists and supporters have been using hashtags like #JusticeForBalochistan and #BringThemBack to amplify their message and reach a wider audience. This digital activism has helped in mobilizing support and garnering international attention.

The Baloch Long March has faced numerous challenges and roadblocks along the way. The participants have encountered resistance from local authorities, who have tried to prevent them from reaching their destination. Despite these obstacles, the marchers remain resilient and determined to continue their fight for justice.

The Pakistani government has faced criticism for its handling of enforced disappearances in Balochistan. While some steps have been taken to address the issue, there is a need for greater transparency, accountability, and a comprehensive strategy to tackle the problem. The Baloch Long March serves as a reminder of the government’s responsibility to protect the rights of its citizens.

The Baloch Long March is just one step in a long journey towards justice and accountability in Balochistan. The movement has sparked conversations and brought attention to the issue of enforced disappearances. However, sustained efforts and continued pressure on the government are necessary to ensure lasting change and bring an end to the suffering of the Baloch people.

The Baloch Long March stands as a powerful symbol of resilience, determination, and the quest for justice. The participants, led by individuals like Mahrang Baloch, have shown immense courage in their fight against enforced disappearances. As the movement gains momentum and garners international support, it is hoped that their demands for justice and accountability will be heard, bringing solace to the families who have long awaited answers.

The Baloch Long March serves as a reminder that the pursuit of justice knows no boundaries and that the voices of the oppressed cannot be silenced. The attempts by the Islamabad Police to arrest the protesters failed to break their spirit, and the Supreme Court taking up the issue gave at least a glimmer of hope that the wrongs will be redressed. More hope at least than being called terrorists by the caretaker PM.
