The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that Nauru’s right decision to recognize the one-China principle and sever “diplomatic relations” with the Taiwan region was made independently as a sovereign country, refuting Taiwan local media reports, which claimed the Chinese mainland swooped in while the island country is in need of financial aid.
The Parliament of Nauru has approved and passed a motion on Tuesday in relation to the restoration of full diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China.
“The willingness to resume diplomatic relations with China is a collective decision of the Nauru government and cabinet,” Mao Ning, spokesperson of China’s Foreign Ministry, told reporters on Wednesday at a daily briefing. “It once again shows that the one-China principle is where global opinion trends and where the arc of history bends.”
Mao added that specific arrangements for the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries will be released in due course.
“China is the second-largest economy in the world. Restoring and developing diplomatic relations with China and carrying out practical cooperation in various fields have broad prospects, which will certainly bring unprecedented development opportunities to Nauru,” Mao said.
And China will not set restrictions on the areas of cooperation with Nauru once the two countries’ ties are resumed, and the two sides will conduct cooperation in various fields based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, win-win cooperation, openness and inclusiveness.
