The winds of change: Youth, technology and changing political landscape

The opportunity for change must be taken

Pakistan’s political landscape may be undergoing a seismic shift, driven by the energy and tenacity of its youth, the power of technology and social media, and a growing demand for accountability, change, good governance and above all, rule of law.

Pakistan’s power brokers need to pay heed as Pakistani people are demanding to renegotiate the decades=old social contract that has been in existence since independence in 1947. The recent February 2024 elections have served as a stark reminder of the potential for transformation in Pakistan, despite the entrenched grip of elite capture and the challenges posed by a powerful military establishment.

Well over 60 million voted in this election if official figures are to be believed, and many of these were young voters as well as women.  As Pakistan embarks on the next decade, the trajectory of Pakistan’s political future hangs in the balance, with the promise of a more democratic, inclusive, and prosperous society tantalizingly within reach provided people’s mandate is respected by all.

At the heart of this transformation is Pakistan’s burgeoning youth population, which constitutes a significant portion of the electorate and will wield considerable influence in shaping the country’s political landscape. With over 60 percent of the population under the age of 30, young Pakistanis are increasingly vocal, engaged, and politically aware, challenging the status quo and demanding a seat at the table. Their enthusiasm, idealism, and willingness to embrace change are driving forces behind the push for a more accountable and responsive government.

Coupled with the youth bulge is the advent of technology and social media, which have revolutionized the way information is disseminated, opinions are formed, and political activism is conducted. Platforms like Twitter (X), Facebook, Instagram, TikTok as well as the use of AI have provided a powerful voice to previously marginalized segments of society, enabling them to mobilize, organize, and advocate for their rights. The democratization of information is likely to empower citizens to hold their leaders accountable, expose corruption, and demand transparency in governance.

The recent elections stand as a testament to the resilience and courage of Pakistani voters, particularly its youth and women, who defied intimidation, coercion, and fear to cast their ballots and express their democratic rights. Despite facing unprecedented obstacles and a climate of uncertainty, Pakistanis turned out in large numbers to participate in the electoral process, sending a clear message that their voices will not be silenced, and their votes will not be suppressed.

Central to this wave of change is the upholding of Pakistan’s constitution and the rule of law, which serve as the bedrock of any democratic society. The rule of law ensures that all individuals and institutions are subject to fair and impartial legal frameworks, fostering accountability, transparency, and justice. By upholding the constitution and respecting the rule of law, Pakistan can break free from the grip of elite capture and establish a more inclusive and equitable political system even though this will take time.

Once again, Pakistan stands at a crossroads, poised on the brink of transformation. The winds of change are blowing, propelled by the aspirations and determination of its people. It is up to Pakistan’s leaders, institutions, and citizens to seize this moment and chart a course towards a more democratic, inclusive, and prosperous future. The time for change is now, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow beckons on the horizon only if people’s will and their mandate is respected.

As Pakistan looks to the future, the next decade will be critical in determining the course of Pakistan’s political evolution. The momentum for change is palpable, driven by the energy and enthusiasm of the country’s youth, the power of technology and social media, and a growing demand for accountability and transparency.

If Pakistan can harness this momentum and its youth continue to show courage, resilience and tenacity and realize that it is really a Test match or a long game and not a one-day or T20 match, to use the cricketing terms, uphold its constitution, and embrace the rule of law, it has the potential to break free from the shackles of elite capture and forge a new social contract and path towards progress and prosperity.
