US envoy reinforces commitment to Pakistan’s democracy, economic growth

KARACHI: The Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) of the United States Mission in Pakistan, Andrew Schofer, concluded his four-day visit to Karachi, emphasising the United States’ dedication to strengthening ties, promoting democracy, economic growth, and women’s empowerment in the region.

Schofer reiterated the United States’ commitment to deepening its partnership with Pakistan, focusing on shared priorities such as democracy, inclusive economic growth, and regional stability.

“This visit to Karachi is the reflection of our commitment to our continued engagement with diverse stakeholders and reinforcing our bilateral ties,” he was quoted as saying by a statement issued by the Consulate General of the United States of America in Karachi on Friday.

One significant aspect of the visit highlighted the United States’ support for the people of Sindh in the face of climate disasters and post-flood recovery efforts. Since 2022, the US has extended over $215 million in assistance to Sindh, particularly addressing education, clean water, malnutrition, and healthcare needs. DCM Schofer underscored the importance of providing aid during crises and building resilience in affected communities.

Emphasising the United States’ dedication to women’s economic empowerment, DCM Schofer visited the USAID-supported Terry Tex International company in Karachi. The visit showcased how USAID’s support can empower local businesses, fostering growth and providing opportunities for women entrepreneurs.

DCM Schofer also engaged with dynamic youth leaders at the Lincoln Corner at the Pakistan American Cultural Center, providing a platform for meaningful discussions. This interaction reflects the US commitment to engaging with the vibrant youth in Pakistan and supporting their initiatives.

The Deputy Chief of Mission seized the opportunity to meet with leaders from the private sector and civil society across various industries, including finance, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. These dialogues emphasised the importance of inclusive private sector-led growth, trade, and investment between Pakistan and the United States.

Highlighting the United States’ commitment to addressing humanitarian challenges, DCM Schofer met with UNHCR officials to discuss issues facing Afghan refugees in Pakistan. The visit demonstrated the US dedication to providing aid and support in collaboration with international organisations.

In a special interaction with the Parsi community in Karachi, DCM Schofer gained insights into the diverse religious and cultural fabric of the city. This event served as a valuable opportunity to foster harmony and appreciation among Karachi’s inhabitants.
