LAHORE: Punjab is set for a major security upgrade with the signing of an agreement to establish Safe City projects in 18 cities across the province. The initiative, spearheaded by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, will see collaboration between the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) and the National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC).
MD Ahsan Younis of PSCA and NRTC representative Syed Amir Javed signed the agreement in the presence of CM Maryam Nawaz. The project encompasses the installation of Air Quality Index Monitoring Environment Sensors in all 18 cities.
Citizens in several cities can expect to see the Safe City project operational soon. Gujrat, Jhelum, Sheikhupura, Okara, and Taxila are expected to have their systems up and running by the end of May. The project is slated for completion in Multan, Bahawalpur, Sargodha, Rahim Yar Khan, Muzaffargarh, Sahiwal, Jhang, Attock, Hasan Abdal, DG Khan, Sialkot, Murree, and Mianwali by the end of this year.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, Chief Secretary, Chairman P&D, Home Secretary, IG Police, and Secretary Finance.
CM Maryam Nawaz has emphasized the importance of safety and security since assuming office. She has directed the launch of the Smart Safe City project across all districts by December 31st. Her visit to the Safe City Authority included observing the monitoring process and reviewing the response to a reported theft incident.
Taking a proactive approach to women’s safety, CM Maryam Nawaz has directed the launch of an upgraded “Women Safety App.”
The briefing also highlighted the introduction of the “Safe City Crime Stopper App,” currently in its trial run. This app allows citizens to report crimes like terrorism, rape, and others. Additionally, AI-based software is being developed to monitor for missing helmets, seat belts, and weapons.
The Safe City Authority cameras will also be utilized for identifying encroachments and ensuring better surveillance of hospitals, bus stands, airports, and railway stations.
This comprehensive Safe City project promises to significantly enhance security measures across Punjab, fostering a safer environment for all.
