GUJRAT: Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Chaudhry Pervez Elahi has announced his participation in the upcoming by-elections, as confirmed by sources. Elahi’s family members reportedly visited him in jail and formally endorsed his candidacy by signing the nomination papers for the by-election.
The decision comes as the seat of PP 32 became vacant following the elevation of Chaudhry Salik Hussain, leader of the Muslim League (Q) and Federal Minister for Overseas, to the position of MNA. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has scheduled by-elections nationwide for April 21, encompassing vacant seats across the country.
According to the ECP’s announced schedule, by-elections for two seats in the National Assembly and Provincial Assemblies will take place on April 21. Additionally, a by-election for one provincial assembly seat in Sindh is also slated for the same date. Nomination papers are set to be submitted from March 16 to 18, with the initial list of candidates to be published on March 18, followed by scrutiny of nomination papers on March 21.
The Election Commission has outlined a timeline for further proceedings, indicating that the Election Tribunal will handle appeals until March 28, while nomination papers can be withdrawn until March 29. The final list of candidates will be made public on March 29, with election symbols allotted on March 30.
Chaudhry Pervez Elahi’s decision to contest the by-elections adds a significant dimension to the upcoming electoral landscape, with observers keenly anticipating the developments leading up to the polls on April 21.
