LAHORE: The Prosecutor Punjab has urged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to consider integrating counter-terrorism measures into the Punjab Kite Flying Ordinance, citing inadequacies in current laws to effectively address kite flying incidents.
In a letter directed to the Punjab Chief Minister, Prosecutor General Punjab, Farhad Ali, highlighted the escalating incidents of kite flying, attributing them to insufficient penalties. Ali proposed the inclusion of counter-terrorism provisions to bolster the existing Punjab Kite Flying Ordinance.
The persistent challenge of regulating kite flying in Punjab persists, with continued reports of fatalities and injuries. Just recently, a tragic incident unfolded in Faisalabad where a young man lost his life after a kite string became entangled around his neck while he was preparing for his wedding. Asif, riding a motorcycle on Dijkot Road, tragically succumbed to the hazards associated with kite flying. Another individual sustained injuries in Faisalabad under similar circumstances. Likewise, in Sialkot, a young man suffered severe injuries near the General Bus Stand due to kite flying activities. Furthermore, in Sargodha and Patoki, several underage children fell victim to kite flying accidents, resulting in loss of life.
Responding to these distressing incidents, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had previously issued directives for stringent measures against the production, sale, and purchase of metal strings used in kite flying. A high-level meeting chaired by the Punjab Chief Minister convened to address the law and order situation, during which the Inspector General of Police Punjab provided a comprehensive briefing.
Expressing profound grief over the tragic demise of a child due to kite strings, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz underscored the urgency for decisive action to combat the scourge of kite flying.
