Veteran actress Mumtaz says Pakistani artists should again be given a chance in Bollywood

Renowned Indian actress Mumtaz, accompanied by her sister Mallika, recently visited Pakistan and has voiced her support for lifting the ban on Pakistani artists, emphasizing the importance of fostering cross-border cultural connections. Mumtaz shared highlights of her trip, including interactions with Pakistani actors and classical singers, on her Instagram account.

In an interview with Zoom, Mumtaz expressed appreciation for the warm reception she received from Pakistani artists during her visit. She shared touching moments, such as Fawad Khan arranging a private restaurant and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan performing despite illness. Reflecting on her experiences with artists like Ghulam Ali, Mumtaz remarked, “They are just like us.”

During the interview, Mumtaz highlighted the abundant talent in both Indian and Pakistani entertainment industries and advocated for opportunities for Pakistani artists in Bollywood. Despite acknowledging Mumbai’s talent pool, Mumtaz stressed the importance of cross-border collaboration.

The ban on Pakistani artists in the Indian entertainment industry, initiated after the 2016 Uri terror attack, remains a contentious issue, reflecting the complexities of cultural relations between India and Pakistan. The demand for restrictions on cross-border talent exchange arose amidst heightened tensions between the two countries.

Following the Uri attack, calls for a ban on Pakistani artists surged across Indian society. Notable figures like Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Atif Aslam, and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan became embroiled in the controversy, leading the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA) to enforce the ban citing security and patriotism concerns.

According to WION, the IMPPA, along with the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) and its affiliates, unanimously supported restricting Pakistani artists and technicians, solidifying the stance against cross-border engagement in the entertainment sector.
