Ex-Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof takes retirement from cricket

Following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ODI series against West Indies, former captain Bismah Maroof has announced her retirement from all forms of cricket with immediate effect.

Making her ODI debut against India in 2006 and her T20I debut against Ireland in 2009, Maroof represented Pakistan in 276 international matches, marking her as the most capped women cricketer from Pakistan. Throughout her career, she accumulated 6,262 international runs and claimed 80 international wickets with her right-arm leg-spin.

Maroof played a pivotal role in Pakistan’s victories at the Asian Games in 2010 and 2014, securing the Gold Medal twice. Additionally, she captained the side in 96 international matches and led Pakistan in various ICC Women’s World Cup and ICC Women’s T20 World Cup editions.

Reflecting on her decision, Maroof expressed gratitude to her family for their unwavering support and acknowledged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for providing her with the platform to showcase her talent, especially in implementing the first-ever parental policy that enabled her to continue her cricketing career while being a mother.

Tania Mallick, Head of Women’s Cricket at PCB, lauded Maroof’s significant contributions to Pakistan women’s cricket, extending heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the board. She wished Maroof success in her future endeavors, hoping her journey ahead would be as rewarding as her illustrious cricketing career.
