LAHORE: Amid escalating controversy over Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz wearing the Punjab Police uniform, the provincial police department issued a statement affirming her entitlement to don the attire as per Punjab Police Dress Regulations.
CM Maryam’s recent inspection of a passing-out parade of lady constables and traffic assistants at the Police Training College, Chung, while adorned in police uniform, sparked both praise and criticism.
As the first female to lead a provincial government, CM Maryam’s appearance in the uniform drew attention, with the police department noting widespread celebration among personnel who interpreted it as a gesture of solidarity.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the police department highlighted the positive reception among female police officers and shared pictures of CM Maryam in uniform. They also referenced a January 30, 2024, notification allowing the governor and chief minister to wear the uniform on specific formal occasions.
Furthermore, the police department reiterated its commitment to enhancing law and order and continuing counter-terrorism efforts under the chief minister’s directives.
However, amidst the public discourse, a citizen named Waqar Ali filed a plea against CM Maryam in a Lahore court, arguing against the wearing of institutional uniforms by individuals. The court deferred the hearing to April 29, requesting additional documentation from the petitioner.
Among critics, National Assembly opposition leader Omar Ayub Khan denounced CM Maryam’s action as unserious, lamenting its potential impact on the country’s image.
