PESHAWAR: Taking advantage of bumper wheat crop in Punjab, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has initiated the approval process for the purchase of wheat from Punjab.
Starting from May 1, the KP government will purchase 300,000 metric tons of wheat for which the provincial government has released Rs29 billion.
Capitalizing on the bumper wheat crop in Punjab this year, a decision has been made to purchase 300,000 metric tons of wheat from Punjab. In this regard, the provincial government has also released funds to the Food Department to start wheat procurement from May 1.
According to the Food Department, KP, the price of wheat has been fixed at Rs3,900 per 40 kilograms. The provincial government has released Rs29 billion to the Food Department for the purchase of wheat. If necessary, the provincial government can purchase an additional 300,000 metric tons of wheat later. The purchase of wheat locally will save the provincial government 9 billion rupees. The price of wheat per mand in the province has been fixed at 3,900 rupees and 5,300 rupees from Pasco.
According to Food Department sources, the said wheat stock will be stored and supplied to the market in November to control the possible wheat crisis.
