Staircase collapse of building traps residents in Karachi’s Lee Market

KARACHI: A staircase in a residential building near Karachi’s Lee Market collapsed, leaving residents trapped inside, during early hours on Sunday.

The three-storey structure, dating back to 1843 and located within Napier police station’s jurisdiction, suffered from neglect, leading to the incident.

Upon the collapse, a rescue team promptly arrived and evacuated 10 individuals, including elderly and children, as well as pets housed on the roof.

Shahid Hussain, a resident, shared that his grandmother acquired the building in 1941, passing it down to her three sons.

Despite the absence of inspections from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), Hussain argued that the building hadn’t been labeled ‘dangerous,’ citing its sturdy walls compared to modern constructions. He lamented the collapse, attributing it to insufficient investment in maintenance.
