There would be ‘Taliban-like’ rule in Palestinian state: Salman Rushdie

Controversial writer Salman Rushdie has recently voiced his apprehensions regarding the hypothetical formation of a Palestinian state under current circumstances, drawing parallels to the Taliban’s regime. He highlighted the potential dominance of Hamas in such a state, cautioning that its governance might replicate the oppressive tendencies witnessed in other parts of the Middle East.

Rushdie raised pertinent questions about whether such a scenario aligns with the progressive values upheld by the Western left. His remarks came in response to the ongoing calls for a free Palestine, particularly evident in the protests on US campuses. Rushdie emphasized the importance of acknowledging Hamas’s role in the conflict and its designation as a terrorist organization, urging for a more nuanced understanding among protesters.

During an interview on a podcast hosted by German broadcaster Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg, Rushdie elaborated on his concerns, expressing distress over the escalating violence in Gaza and the loss of innocent lives. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach to the protests, acknowledging the right to demonstrate while also considering the safety and well-being of all students involved. Rushdie reflected on the complexities of the situation, cautioning against the manifestation of antisemitism and the overt support of extremist groups like Hamas within progressive movements.

Moreover, Rushdie discussed his latest memoir, “Knife,” during the podcast, delving into his personal experiences and reflections following a violent attack in New York state in 2022. This incident occurred 33 years after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa against Rushdie for his controversial novel, “The Satanic Verses.” The memoir chronicles Rushdie’s journey of recovery and resilience in the face of adversity, offering insights into his perspective on faith, freedom of expression, and the human condition.

The dissemination of Rushdie’s comments was facilitated by the sharing of a video clip by the official X account for Israel and Israeli diplomat David Saranga, underscoring the significance of his perspective on the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
