To those critical of Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of toxic masculinity in “Animal,” it may be a pleasant surprise that Netflix’s viewing figures show Kiran Rao’s “Laapataa Ladies” has outperformed it.
“Laapataa Ladies,” a comedy about two brides who accidentally switch places at a train station after their weddings, premiered in theaters on March 1 before arriving on Netflix. According to Firstpost, the Aamir Khan production has achieved 13.8 million views on the streaming platform. In contrast, the global hit “Animal,” directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, garnered 13.6 million views in its first three weeks on Netflix but fell out of the top 10 in week four.
Starring Sparsh Shrivastava, Pratibha Ranta, Nitanshi Goel, and Ravi Kishan, “Laapataa Ladies” has been particularly well-received in the UK since its OTT release. Its unique take on relationships combined with engaging storytelling has struck a chord with both viewers and critics, who have praised the film for its character depth and nuanced depiction of relationships.
Reflecting the strong word-of-mouth buzz, one viewer shared, “It’s become very popular in the UK. All my local friends loved it. They have only watched movies like Bahubali. So proud when they talk about Laapataa Ladies.” Another viewer echoed, “This movie deserves all the attention.”
Meanwhile, “Animal,” despite featuring the star power of Ranbir Kapoor, has sparked controversy over its portrayal of harmful behavior. Kapoor defended the film’s themes, stating that the characters were meant to provoke discussion.
