Hyderabad LPG shop blast toll rises to 10; 13 more fighting for life in hospital

HYDERABAD: The death toll from the blast in a shop selling Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Hyderabad has risen to 10, while 13 victims of the Hyderabad cylinder blast are currently receiving treatment at the Burns Ward of Civil Hospital.

According to Civil Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Khalid Bukhari, another injured of the blast succumbed to his burns, bringing the death toll to 10. The victim 32-year-old Faizan, son of Ishaq had sustained 100 percent burns in the incident, he added.

He informed that 13 more injured of the cylinder blast were currently undergoing treatment at the Burns Ward of Civil Hospital. Of these, the condition of 10 patients is critical. Most of the deceased and injured are children.

The fire broke out because of a gas leakage which occurred during the decanting process of filling LPG from a large cylinder to a small one in the shop located under a residential building in Pareetabad.

Hyderabad’s Deputy Commissioner Zainul Abideen Memon said that the shop was running illegally and had no permit.

Blazes from the shop engulfed the building, trapping children studying in a local seminary located in the same building.

The LPG shops not only sell gas for domestic use but also fill cylinders fitted in cars, rickshaws, and goods transport vehicles in blatant violation of the rules and regulations of the Oil and Gas Registration Authority (OGRA).

Such shops can be found on the main roads, streets, and even in small neighbourhoods. Often underage children are seen filling LPG cylinders at these businesses.
