VIENNA: Chairman of the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) Muhammad Yousuf Khan on Thursday affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the peaceful use of outer space, describing it as humanity’s common heritage.
His remarks were delivered during the opening session of the 67th session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), which convened in Vienna and will run until June 28.
In his address, Khan emphasized the importance of equitable and non-discriminatory access to outer space, a principle echoed in a news release from Islamabad on Thursday.
The SUPARCO Chairman highlighted Pakistan’s recent achievements in space technology, including the successful launches of the iCUBE-Qamar satellite and the PakSat-MM1 communication satellite earlier in May.
Looking ahead, Khan disclosed plans for an ambitious lunar south pole rover mission as part of a collaboration with China’s Chang’E-8 Mission.
Additionally, on June 18, Khan participated in the Lunar Conference hosted by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), where he reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to lunar exploration and its commitment to international collaboration in space research.
