SUKKUR: Sindh’s Minister for Irrigation, Jam Khan Shoro, on Monday announced that swift actions are being taken to restore the water supply to canals via the Sukkur Barrage, which has been compromised due to damage to its gates.
This restoration work has brought a sense of relief to the local farmers and agriculturalists who have been grappling with severe water shortages.
Minister Shoro emphasized that repairs are being conducted on a war footing to ensure the barrage resumes full functionality as soon as possible. He has directed all relevant authorities to expedite the repair processes and minimize any disruptions to water supply.
The immediate focus has been on repairing critical gates, with Chinese engineers making progress on Gate No. 44, and a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) now in place for the restoration of Gate No. 47.
These efforts are crucial as millions of farmers in Sindh rely heavily on the water from Sukkur Barrage for irrigation.
Additionally, a committee has been established to investigate the cause of the damage to the barrage’s gates and is expected to report its findings within five days. The minister’s assurances and the ongoing work at the site, including a round-the-clock camp set up for engineers and experts, are pivotal in supporting the region’s agricultural sector during this critical period.
