US reaffirms support for Pakistan’s counterterrorism efforts

During a recent media briefing, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller reiterated America’s support for Pakistan in its ongoing efforts to counter terrorism.

“Pakistan has endured severe losses due to terrorist activities, and it is crucial that no nation should face such horrors. The US and Pakistan share a common goal in enhancing regional security,” Miller stated. He emphasized the comprehensive support the US provides, including high-level counterterrorism dialogues, funding for capacity-building programs, and military collaborations aimed at enhancing Pakistan’s security framework.

When questioned about a recent incident in Swat, where a man accused of blasphemy was lynched and killed by a mob, Miller expressed profound concern. “We are deeply troubled by these events and extend our condolences to the family of the victim. We advocate for swift justice for those injured in the violence,” he said. Miller condemned violence and intimidation, criticizing blasphemy laws in Pakistan and globally for endangering fundamental human rights and the freedom of belief.

Additionally, Miller discussed a situation in Punjab province where police allegedly demolished 17 graves belonging to a minority community under pressure from local groups. He underscored the US’s stance urging Pakistani authorities to respect and protect all individuals’ human rights and freedoms, including religious and expression freedoms.

Addressing Pakistan’s status on the Country of Particular Concern (CPC) list, Miller highlighted continuous dialogues with Pakistani officials regarding religious freedom and the treatment of religious minorities. “These discussions reflect not only in Pakistan’s CPC designation but also in our department’s annual reports on religious freedom and human rights,” Miller added.
