Emergency center launched as heavy rains threaten Punjab and Sindh

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has initiated the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) due to anticipated heavy rains and the potential for flooding in Punjab and Sindh. This proactive measure follows weather predictions from eastern India that may impact various regions in Pakistan.

The NDMA’s latest monsoon report highlights that from July 2, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in the upper catchment areas of the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers. Additionally, a lightning strike alert has been issued for southern and central Punjab, as well as Islamabad, scheduled for July 5 to 7.

Officials have expressed concerns about the Sutlej River, where water levels are projected to reach 50,000 cusecs by July 5, potentially increasing to 120,000 cusecs by July 10, signaling a high-level flood scenario.

The NDMA is actively coordinating with federal and provincial agencies to mitigate risks and prepare for any emergency. Public safety measures are being enforced, and residents in vulnerable areas are encouraged to remain vigilant, follow evacuation directives, and keep abreast of the latest weather updates.

Health advisories caution against flood-related diseases and electrocution risks due to downed power lines. Communities have been advised to have evacuation plans ready, identify safe locations, and prepare emergency kits.

Travel during this period should be limited to necessities to avoid risks associated with severe weather and flooding.

The NDMA continues to urge the public to adhere strictly to guidelines provided by local authorities and stay informed through official channels.
