Punjab to purge civil service of corruption

LAHORE: The Punjab government has initiated a stringent campaign against corruption and undue political influence within the civil service. This action targets those officers who were allegedly appointed through corrupt practices or political recommendations during the tenure of the previous government.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has instructed the relevant authorities to scrutinize such appointments closely. She has emphasized the exclusion of corrupt officers from holding significant roles within the administration.

To promote fairness and competence, the government has set up a four-member oversight board for future appointments, led by Chief Minister Nawaz herself and including Chief Secretary Punjab, Zahid Akhtar Zaman. This board will ensure that appointments are made purely on merit, based on thorough interviews and evaluations of the candidates’ past performances.

The new measures also include a structured performance review system for ongoing assessments of both police and civil administration officials. These steps are part of a broader effort to instill a culture of meritocracy and diminish the impact of nepotism and favoritism in Punjab’s civil services.
