ISLAMABAD: As per reports there is a good chance the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will replace Babar Azam as white-ball captain.
Pakistan was knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the group stages after an abysmal performance with losses to USA and India in their two opening matches. This was the first time in fact that the green shirts were knocked out of a T20 WC at such an early stage.
Babar Azam’s captaincy came under intense scrutiny as a result, especially considering that he was reinstated just a few months prior to the tournament’s start after he had stepped down following the debacle of the ODI World Cup in 2023.
There is a section in the team that wants Shaheen Shah Afridi to be reinstated but the majority want Mohammad Rizwan to become red-ball captain thus allowing Shan Masood to take up the mantle if Babar is replaced.
Following the embarrassing performance of the Pakistan cricket team at the tournament, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said that ‘major surgery’ was required. However, reports suggest that he has been advised not to have any confrontation with senior players and thus should avoid making any major changes.
