Meteorological Department Director General Mehr Sahibzad Khan has updated the nation on the monsoon season, indicating that this year’s rains will likely surpass normal levels.
Khan noted that Pakistan has already experienced an 8% increase in rainfall over the past 11 days.
According to Khan, Punjab has seen a substantial increase in rainfall with 59% more than average, while Sindh has experienced a 62% decrease. He reassured that, despite the heavy rains, there is currently no emergency situation in the rivers.
“The Chenab and Ravi rivers have adequate capacity to handle the current rainfall,” stated Khan, though he mentioned potential flood situations in the Chenab River. He pointed out that while floods present challenges, they can also benefit agriculture.
Khan confirmed that there is no flood situation anywhere in the country at the moment. He highlighted the rain’s positive impact on agriculture, especially in rice-growing areas, but cautioned that excessive rain could harm vegetable and cotton crops.
He emphasized the Met Department’s commitment to keeping farmers informed about the rains and their effects. “We provide forecasts about rainfall intensity three to four days in advance,” Khan said, stressing the importance of timely updates for agricultural planning.
The Met Department has forecast heavy rain in several parts of the country today, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Potohar region, upper Punjab, and northeast Balochistan. Islamabad is expected to experience partly cloudy conditions with a likelihood of rain in and around the city.
Lahore weather:
Lahore residents can expect rain this afternoon in various parts of the city. The Met Department predicts that dark clouds will form, followed by rain. The minimum temperature in Lahore on Thursday is expected to be 27 degrees Celsius, with a maximum of 38 degrees Celsius.
The anticipated rain is likely to relieve the current heat, creating more pleasant weather for residents. The Met Department advises residents to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions during heavy rain, particularly in flood-prone areas.
Karachi weather
The next spell of monsoon rains in Karachi is expected to begin after July 20. The weather office forecasts partly cloudy, hot, and humid conditions for the city.
