‘Plea against tree-cutting’: SHC serves notice on Karachi Mayor, others

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday served notices on Mayor Karachi and others and sought reply on a petition filed by a citizen against tree-cutting by the City District Government Karachi.

A citizen filed the petition in the SHC, seeking restraining order to forbid the City Government Karachi from cutting tree amid worst impact of climate change.

The petitioner has named the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), Director General of Parks, and others as respondents.

The SHC heard the petition and served notices on the Mayor Karachi and others in the case and sought their reply on the next hearing of the case.

The bench adjourned further hearing of the case until August 21.

The petitioner pleaded with the court that the DG Parks has ordered cutting of trees on the instructions of the city’s mayor. “The trees have been cut around the city’s Jail Chowrangi (roundabout),” he claimed.

“It is violation of the court’s prohibition order of cutting trees,” the petitioner asserted, adding that cutting of trees amid extreme weather events has been seen as a step that will further aggravate the climate problems for the city including prolonged heatwaves and soaring temperatures.
