SC verdict: Who will lose National, Provincial Assembly membership?

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court’s recent decision to allocate reserved seats for women and minorities to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has led to the expiration of the memberships of several National and Provincial Assembly members.

The ruling has resulted in the termination of 22 National Assembly members’ memberships, including 19 women and 3 minority representatives. The affected minority members are Neelam of PML-N, James Iqbal of JUI, and Ramesh Kumar of PPP.

In Punjab, 27 assembly members have lost their seats. Among them are notable names such as Sadia Muzaffar, Faza Maimuna, Abida Bashir, Maqsoodan Bibi, Amara Khan, Soumia Atta, Rahat Afza, Rukhsana Shafiq, Tahseen Fawad, Farzana Abbas, Shagufta Faisal, Uzmi Butt, Maria Talal, Sajda Naveed, Nasreen Riaz, Afshan Hassan, Amina Parveen, Shahrabano, Zeiba Ghafoor, Rubina Nazir, Syeda Samira Ahmed, Syeda Samreen Taj, Kanwal Nauman, and Saima Zahid. Also affected are Waseem Anjum and Tariq Masih from Muslim League-N, and Basruji from PPP, who held non-Muslim seats.

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly saw the suspension of 21 members, including 8 women and 4 minority seats.

The terminated women members include JUI’s Bilqis, Satara Afrin, Amna Jalil Jan, Madina Gul Afridi, Rabia Shaheen, Nilo Farbegum, Nahida Noor, and Areefa Bibi. From PML-N, Amina Sardar, Faiza Malik, Afshan Hussain, Shazia Jadoon, and Jameela Pracha are affected, while PPP’s Shazia Tahmas Khan, Sajida Tabsum, Mehr Sultana, Ashbarjan Jadoon, Farzana Sherry, and Nadia Sher also lost their seats. JUI’s Girpal Singh, Askar Parvez, PML-N’s Suresh Kumar, and PPP’s Biharilal are among the terminated minority members.

Three specific seats in the Sindh Assembly have also expired. These include two women, Samita Afzal Syed of PPP and Musarrat Jabin of Muttahida Qaumi Movement, along with one minority member.

The Supreme Court’s decision has reshaped the political landscape, impacting multiple assemblies across the country.
