Following the overturning of conviction by an Islamabad district and sessions court in the Iddat case against founder PTI Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi, their release has also been ordered.
In its short order announced today (Saturday) the court ruled that both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi should be released immediately if there are no other cases pending against them in which they have been jailed.
While Bushra Bibi’s release is more likely, sources say that Imran Khan is unlikely to be released.
The Iddat case was the only remaining case out the multiple against him, in which Imran Khan was sentenced to prison. That conviction has been overturned.
Another case, the Al-Qadir trust case, remained pending only until recently; Imran Khan secured bail in that case as well.
Technically speaking, Imran Khan is therefore a free man but the PML-N government has vowed to keep Khan behind bars for ‘the next 10 years’.
As per sources, the govt is very likely to prepare fresh cases against Imran Khan to keep him incarcerated.
