Despite being a rematch of last year’s event, it did not match the intensity of the previous five-set thriller as Djokovic struggled against the dominant Spaniard.
Alcaraz squandered three championship points when trying to serve out the victory but eventually celebrated after winning the third-set tie-break with a 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-4) score.
“Honestly, it is a dream for me winning this trophy,” said Alcaraz. “I did an interview when I was 11 and I said my dream is to win Wimbledon.”
Gracious in defeat, Djokovic shared a smile and warm embrace with Alcaraz at the net following the comprehensive defeat.
For the second consecutive year, Djokovic aimed to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon men’s titles. The 24-time major winner also sought to surpass Margaret Court to claim the all-time record for the most Grand Slam singles titles.
As has become tradition, Alcaraz climbed up to the players’ box, where he was greeted by his team and family, celebrating a 14th consecutive match win at Wimbledon.
This victory maintains the four-time major winner’s perfect record in Grand Slam finals, making him the youngest man to win both Wimbledon and the French Open in the same year.
