PTI’s Sanam Javed arrested again following court dismissal of charges

ISLAMABAD: In a surprising turn of events, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activist Sanam Javed has been arrested once again, just hours after being acquitted by a local Islamabad court of charges brought by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

She had been released from custody on Sunday following the court’s decision in her favor.

However, her freedom was short-lived as she was apprehended shortly after arriving at the office of her lawyer, Mian Ali Ashfaq.

Confirming the re-arrest on social media, Ashfaq stated that Islamabad police had taken Ms. Javed into custody. He emphasized the importance of cooperating with law enforcement and said they had handed her over without resistance.

Mian Ali Ashfaq stated, “Sanam Javed has been re-arrested by Islamabad police. We have cooperated fully with the authorities, demonstrating the conduct expected of law-abiding citizens.”

The PTI activist’s re-arrest has raised questions and concerns among party supporters and the general public.

Earlier, an Islamabad district and sessions court dismissed the case against PTI activist Sanam Javed made over tweets on social media platform X. Duty Magistrate Malik Imran pronounced the reserved verdict on Sanam Javed’s remand.

Previously, a two-member bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) led by Justice Asjad Javed Gharal had discharged the PTI activist from the Gujranwala case. In her plea, she challenged the physical remand issued in the Gujranwala Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) case, arguing that she was being unfairly targeted in politically motivated cases.

She claimed that she was repeatedly arrested in new cases immediately after being released from others. The PTI activist’s petition stated that the ongoing legal actions against her were politically driven and requested the court to dismiss the case.

The public prosecutor countered that Ms. Javed was implicated based on statements linking her to incidents of arson on May 9, which are currently under investigation. Despite these claims, the court ruled in favor of Sanam Javed, discharging her from the Gujranwala case.
