Punjab govt initiates internship programme for anti-smog campaign

LAHORE: The Punjab government has initiated the Chief Minister Climate Leadership Development Internship Program, a key component of the My Smog Free Punjab campaign.

Directed by Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the program aims to implement sustainable environmental measures to combat smog.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized the necessity of joint efforts to find a long-term solution to smog. “Young graduates will provide unique community services under the Smog Free Punjab Initiative,” she said. “Graduates who have completed their degrees in the last two years are eligible to apply.”

Under the internship program, selected interns will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 25,000. The initiative is designed to offer a platform for community service and environmental protection.

Maryam Nawaz highlighted that registration for the Climate Leadership Development Internship Program is open until July 20, 2024. Interns aged 18 to 25 who complete the program will receive a community service certificate from the Environment Protection Department and the Punjab Higher Education Commission.

The Chief Minister called for public support in tackling the severe smog issue. She urged citizens to reduce vehicle and factory emissions and to engage in tree planting efforts.

Additionally, Maryam Nawaz directed a reduction in plastic use and the avoidance of burning crop residues. “If we do not strive to keep our environment clean today, then when and who will do it? Inshallah, the measures taken by the Punjab government will reduce smog this year,” she affirmed.
