China says it’s ready to work toward intra-Palestinian reconciliation

BEIJING: The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that China is ready to provide a platform and create opportunities for Palestinian factions to engage in dialogue for reconciliation.

Lin Jian, spokesperson for the ministry, reiterated that China has always supported reconciliation and unity among Palestinian factions through dialogue and consultations.

Lin made the comments in response to reports that senior officials of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah) and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) will meet in Beijing over the upcoming weekend.

China will release relevant, specific information in due course, the spokesperson said.

Lin said China and the relevant Palestinian parties are working toward the same end and that Beijing is willing to strengthen communication and coordination with all parties to secure intra-Palestinian reconciliation.

The Palestinian rivals, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah and Gaza’s governing authority Hamas, held talks in Beijing in April, and both sides had an in-depth and candid dialogue on promoting Palestinian reconciliation.

“The two sides fully expressed their political will of realizing reconciliation through dialogue and consultation, had discussions on many specific issues, and made encouraging progress,” read a statement by the ministry following the talks.

Both sides highly appreciated China’s firm support for the just cause of the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights, thanked the Chinese side for its efforts to help strengthen Palestinian internal unity and agreed on ideas for future dialogue, according to the statement.

China ready to continue working to restore stability in Haiti, says foreign ministry

China is ready to continue working to restore stability in Haiti, said Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), on Tuesday, responding to a query on China’s support for the UN Security Council’s adoption of a related resolution.

Although Haiti has not yet established diplomatic relations with China, China recently voted in favor of resolution 2743, which extends the mandate of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) for one year and was passed unanimously by the UN Security Council on July 12.

Lin said that as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has long dealt with the issue of Haiti with a responsible and constructive attitude, together with the international community.

He noted that alongside other members of the Security Council, China recently supported the adoption of resolution 2743, sending a positive signal that the international community will continue to support the people of Haiti.

After the meeting that passed the resolution, Haiti expressed its gratitude to China and its appreciation for the constructive role China has played. The country is ready to maintain its contact and communication with China, Lin added.

“China is willing to continue working to restore stability in Haiti, and to support the Haitian people in finding a Haitian-led and Haitian-owned solution,” he said.

The UN Security Council, by unanimously adopting resolution 2743, requested all Haitian stakeholders to urgently establish a provisional electoral council and reach an agreement on a sustainable, time-bound and commonly accepted road map for elections.

The resolution called on BINUH to develop a strategy on how it will support a Haitian-led, Haitian-owned political process, and requested the mission to update the council on this strategy and its implementation in its quarterly reports.

BINUH, a special political mission established by the UN Security Council in 2019, is tasked to advise the Haitian government in promoting and strengthening political stability and good governance, preserving and advancing a peaceful and stable environment, and protecting and promoting human rights.
