Several Indian airlines’ operations hit by Microsoft’s global outage

As a widespread Microsoft outage affected users globally, several Indian airlines experienced operational disruptions.

IndiGo updated its passengers on microblogging site X, informing them of the system impacts due to the Microsoft outage. “During this time, booking, check-in, access to your boarding pass, and some flights may be impacted. We appreciate your patience,” the airline announced.

In one of their Tweets, IndiGo stated, “Our systems are currently impacted by a Microsoft outage, which is also affecting other companies. During this time booking, check-in, access to your boarding pass, and some flights may be impacted. We appreciate your patience.”

An IndiGo passenger flying from Hyderabad to Kolkata shared a photo on X of the first “handwritten boarding pass” he received due to the global outage.

Air India Express also reported “digital infrastructure issues” affecting its online and airport operations worldwide. The airline advised passengers to plan their travel accordingly, allowing extra time for airport procedures. “We regret the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time,” the airline stated.

Akasa Air’s operations were similarly disrupted by the Microsoft outage. The airline informed passengers that its online services, including booking, check-in, and manage booking services, would be temporarily unavailable.

Akasa Air requested passengers with immediate travel plans to arrive early at the airport for manual check-in and boarding processes. “Currently we are following manual check-in and boarding processes at the airports and hence request passengers with immediate travel plans to reach the airport early to check-in at our counters,” the airline said.

A private news outlet reported on the widespread disruptions and the airlines’ efforts to manage the impact on their operations.

Several Indian brokerages, including Nuvama Wealth Management, Edelweiss Mutual Fund, Motilal Oswal, IIFL Securities, 5Paisa Capital, and Angel Broking, are experiencing technical difficulties,

Meanwhile, India’s interbank trading platforms remained operational, with banks able to execute bonds and foreign exchange transactions without issues. A source at the country’s central bank confirmed awareness of the global outage but stated their systems were functioning properly.

In Australia, widespread outages affecting banks, telecom networks, and media were reported, potentially linked to an issue at global cybersecurity firm Crowdstrike.

Additionally, major U.S. airlines issued ground stops due to communications problems.

Crowdstrike acknowledged the issue with a recorded phone message on Friday, stating they were aware of reports of crashes on Microsoft’s Windows operating system related to its Falcon sensor.
