Militants attack Peshawar checkpost, injure one officer

PESHAWAR: A police officer sustained injuries early Wednesday morning when militants opened fire at a police checkpost in Peshawar.

According to police sources, the assailants initiated the attack, prompting the police personnel stationed at the checkpost to retaliate. However, one of the attackers managed to flee the scene.

In recent months, incidents of terrorism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have seen a notable increase, leading the government to announce the commencement of operation ‘Azm-i-Istehkam’. The objective of this operation is to eliminate militant elements from the province.

During a press briefing on Monday, ISPR Director General (DG) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif criticized those who have raised concerns about the operation, arguing that such criticisms could adversely impact the livelihoods of the local populace.

“There is a growing narrative suggesting that the operation will lead to displacement of people, but our objective is solely to strengthen the existing National Action Plan (NAP),” stated the DG ISPR. He emphasized that the operation’s official documentation clearly outlines this objective.
