Legal battle erupts over Punjab’s public gathering ban under Section 144

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) is currently reviewing a challenge to the enforcement of Section 144 across Punjab.

The challenge was filed by Azhar Siddique, a lawyer, who has named the Punjab government, the Home Secretary, and the Deputy Commissioner as respondents.

The petition argues that the enforcement of Section 144 was politically motivated and intended to obstruct a peaceful protest organized by a political party. Siddique’s plea requests that the court nullify the Section 144 notification and suspend its enforcement until a final judgment is made.

The Home Department has imposed a ban on processions, public gatherings, sit-ins, and rallies throughout Punjab for three days, from July 26 (Friday) to July 28 (Sunday).

The department cites concerns over terrorism threats, asserting that public gatherings could be vulnerable to militant attacks. They emphasize that the order aims to maintain law and order and ensure the safety of lives and property. The Punjab administration has committed to enforcing the order strictly.
