Trump asserts democratic ‘coup’ behind Biden’s campaign withdrawal

Former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump has claimed that a Democrat-led “coup” was responsible for President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.

In a recent interview on Fox and Friends, Trump asserted, without presenting evidence, that Biden’s withdrawal was orchestrated by key Democratic figures who feared he would lose to Trump in the election.

Trump alleged that influential Democrats, including Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama, pressured Biden to step down.

“Well, I think it was a coup. They didn’t want him running. He was way down in the polls, and they thought he was going to lose. They went to him and they said, ‘You can’t win the race,’ which I think is true,” Trump said. He claimed to have inside information from Democratic sources, asserting that the pressure on Biden was severe and covertly hostile.

Trump’s comments come amid reports that Biden faced increasing pressure from within the Democratic Party, with some members publicly urging him to withdraw. Biden’s decline in public confidence, exacerbated by poor debate performances and concerns about his mental fitness, led to growing calls for him to step aside. Despite his initial insistence on continuing his campaign, Biden officially withdrew from the race on July 21.

Trump also criticized Democrats for allegedly interfering in his legal battles, claiming that they were behind the various court cases he faces. “Every single court case that I have is pushed on by them. Just so you know, they push all these cases on me. They’re the ones that start it. And then they say, ‘I’m a prosecutor, he’s a criminal,’” Trump stated. He boasted about his success in winning these cases.

This commentary comes against the backdrop of ongoing legal issues for Trump, including charges related to his actions surrounding the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Trump has consistently contested the legitimacy of the 2020 election and the electoral process, a stance that has drawn criticism from various quarters, including from his former vice president, Mike Pence, who has defended the integrity of the election results.
