KP advisor criticizes IPPs as symbols of political elite’s corruption

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Advisor for Information, Barrister Dr. Saif, has criticized the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) introduced by the PML-N and PPP, describing them as a “termite” consuming the nation’s resources.

In a statement, Dr. Saif labeled IPPs as emblematic of elite corruption, imposed on the public through agreements negotiated by political elites in the 1990s. He questioned who brought IPPs into the country in 1994, 2002, and 2015, renewed their contracts, and who benefited financially from these deals. Despite the substantial influence of powerful families and individuals, no audit of the IPPs has been conducted in the past 30 years.

Dr. Saif called for the immediate cancellation of IPP contracts, labeling them as symbols of economic destruction. He demanded transparent investigations into these power plants, predicting that prominent families such as the Sharifs and Zardaris, along with their associates, would be implicated.

He also referenced the Supreme Court’s 2012 revelation of corruption within the IPPs, noting that elite figures continue to exploit national wealth through these power plants. Despite the IPPs’ mandate to eliminate load shedding, the issue remains unresolved while IPPs continue to receive substantial payments.
