Dar highlights Pakistan’s role in advancing commonwealth connectivity, trade

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Monday reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to its partnership with the Commonwealth whilst highlighting that Pakistan’s vision of regional connectivity and trade aligns with the Commonwealth’s connectivity agenda.

In a news conference alongside Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland in Islamabad, Dar emphasized Pakistan’s high regard for the Commonwealth and its institutions, describing it as a vital platform for forging consensus and developing partnerships in the face of unprecedented global challenges.

Dar asserted that the Commonwealth should urgently address unresolved disputes among member states, advocate for the respect of international law, and enforce UN Security Council resolutions.

He pointed out the significant opportunities for collaboration in achieving development goals, particularly in education, skill development, youth and women empowerment, health, and environmental preservation.

Dar also endorsed the Commonwealth’s target of increasing intra-Commonwealth trade to $2 trillion by 2030. He noted that this goal would not only generate job opportunities for the youth but also foster win-win cooperation among member states.

Additionally, Dar briefed the Commonwealth Secretary-General on Pakistan’s policies to combat climate change. He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to working with the Commonwealth to build resilience against climate-induced disasters.

In her remarks, the Commonwealth Secretary-General expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s resilience and determination following the 2022 floods, and reiterated the Commonwealth’s solidarity with the Pakistani people during those challenging times.
