Kate Middleton has taken a definitive step to address ongoing discussions about race within the Royal Family, using a ‘powerful phrase’ to quell the controversy.
The controversy began after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, made explosive remarks alleging that an unnamed Royal Family member had expressed “concerns and conversations about how dark [their baby’s] skin might be.”
In response, Buckingham Palace issued a statement acknowledging the seriousness of the issues raised, particularly those concerning race. The statement read, “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”
Royal commentator Robert Jobson, in his new biography titled “Catherine, Princess of Wales,” revealed that Kate, 42, was instrumental in coining the now-famous phrase “recollections may vary,” which subtly countered the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s allegations.
Jobson wrote, “The original draft of the statement had been much milder, but both William and Catherine were keen to toughen it up. It was the then Duchess of Cambridge herself who came up with the powerful phrase ‘recollections may vary’.”
He further explained that Prince William viewed Harry and Meghan’s behavior as unforgivable, leading to a breakdown in trust. Jobson added, “Catherine herself was deeply wounded by the various allegations made in the interview, as well as by the Sussexes’ subsequent revelations in their Netflix series and in Harry’s book ‘Spare’.”
Despite the tension, Prince Harry refuted claims in a 2023 interview that he or Meghan had ever labeled the Royal Family as “racist”.
