- Incident occurred in Darra Adamkhel area of Kohat district
KOHAT: Eleven members of the same family died after being trapped in a rainwater-flooded basement of their house where they were asleep in Darra Adamkhel in Kohat District, rescuers and health officials said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in Old Bazid Khel area of Dara Adam Khel, as heavy rainfall continued across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
According to the spokesman for the Kohat Rescue Service, 11 family members got trapped in the flooded basement where they were asleep. The deceased include six children, three women, and two men, all from the same family.
The rescue officials shifted the bodies to a nearby hospital for medicolegal formalities.
According to Rescue 1122, personnel two ambulances including a rescue vehicle were rushed to the site and rescued an injured man and a child.
After a long strenuous effort, the rescuers were able to take out the body of a girl who was missing.
Meanwhile, heavy rains have brought an end to long drought in Khyber District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Khyber Bara, Jamrud, Landi Kotal and Tirah Valley received heavy rains bringing down the mercury.
Meanwhile, eight people lost their lives in Tharparkar in different incidents of lightning strikes. Whereas, three fatalities happened as a result of heavy downpour in Rawalpindi.
Besides, many low-lying areas were inundated in Islamabad and Rawalpindi as monsoon currents lashed the twin cities.
A day earlier, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported that all rivers and streams in Punjab are experiencing normal water flow amidst the ongoing monsoon rains.
According to the PDMA spokesperson, the water flow in dams and barrages is also stable. The current water level in Mangla Dam is at 58%, while Tarbela Dam is at 69%. Indian dams on the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers have water levels up to 39%.
The monsoon rain pattern is expected to continue until July 31. The PDMA has forecasted more monsoon rains in most districts of Punjab over the next 24 hours.
NDMA issues flood alert
On the other hand, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said that ongoing monsoon spell across the country may cause flash floods and urban flooding in many areas, warning that flash floods can catch people off guard resulting in huge losses.
“Even a mere six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet, and just one foot of moving water can sweep away a vehicle. Bridges can be hazardous during floods. Avoid crossing them if water is flowing rapidly. Avoid staying in weak structures. In case of intense rain, seek shelter in safe places,” cautioned the NDMA in its advisory.
The disaster authority has also launched an application with the name “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” which is available on Google Play Store and iOS.
