Ride hailing company’s cab driver allegedly assaults Lahore woman

LAHORE: An online taxi driver has been accused of assaulting a female passenger in the Sabzazar area of Lahore.

According to police reports, the woman booked a ride through an online cab hailing company’s app and upon reaching her friend’s house in Karachi Pura, the driver requested water.

While the woman went to get the water, the driver reportedly entered the house and assaulted her.

The FIR details that the assault occurred in the presence of the woman’s friend. When her parents arrived, they intervened and beat the driver before letting him go to avoid further embarrassment. The police have registered a case and are conducting raids to apprehend the suspect.

In a similar incident in January, Lahore police had arrested a cab driver with the assistance of Safe City cameras for allegedly harassing a girl who was on her way to university.

The girl claimed the driver started harassing her during the journey. When the car reached Raiwind, she called 15 and asked for assistance.

A spokesperson for Safe City said the police had responded to the incident immediately after receiving the call and arrested the driver near Nawab Town. The girl was rescued safely.

The Safe City cameras helped the police pinpoint the location of the vehicle after the incident, the spokesperson said.

The police initiated a probe into the matter with the help of video footage showing the girl exiting the moving car and slamming its door aggressively, according to a spokesperson.

Police also advised females to install the Punjab police’s Women’s Safety App, featuring live chat and emergency services via 15, which provides rapid rescue. According to the spokesperson, Punjab police have assisted 300,000 women with this application so far.
