First female officer takes role in Khyber tribal district near Afghan border

PESHAWAR: In a groundbreaking development, Mehek Pervez Masih has been appointed as the Additional SHO in Landi Kotal, marking her as the first female officer to serve in the Khyber tribal district near the Afghan border.

DPO Khyber, Salim Kalachi, stated that Masih’s appointment is a crucial part of efforts to enhance the handling of women’s issues within the region. The establishment of a women’s desk at the district level has led to an increase in complaints from women, spanning issues from violence to inheritance rights. The inclusion of a female officer is anticipated to improve both the understanding and resolution of these concerns.

Salim Abbas Kalachi underscored the significance of Masih’s role as the first female Additional SHO in the history of Khyber, noting it as a significant step toward creating employment opportunities for women and fostering a supportive environment for female police officers.

Over the past year, the women’s desk at Bara police station has successfully addressed numerous issues affecting tribal women. Agustin Jacob, a social leader from the Christian minority community, commended the appointment, viewing it as a moment of pride and a strong affirmation of minority representation within the police force.

This appointment highlights Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s dedication to inclusivity and empowering women in law enforcement, signifying a pivotal shift in the tribal district’s approach to justice and representation.
