Flawed investigations lead to zero convictions for Punjab Police

LAHORE: Despite arresting numerous individuals accused of serious crimes like robbery, murder, and rape, Punjab Police has not secured any convictions for the criminals apprehended this year so far.

The investigative process has been criticized for its flaws, leading to many accused individuals escaping punishment due to inadequate evidence gathering. Currently, Punjab Police has only been able to collect challans for 48% of the cases, with the remaining 52% still pending.

Over the first seven and a half months of the year, the police failed to secure convictions in 67,204 cases, with many of the accused still on bail. The lack of thorough investigations and apparent disinterest from the police are seen as significant barriers to securing convictions.

There has been an increased public awareness of these issues, particularly as records show 1,608 murder cases, 1,406 cases of sexual abuse, and 8,829 abduction cases where challans were completed and submitted to the courts.

Police authorities have acknowledged the challenges in investigations, citing a shortage of funds and a lack of investigative officers as major impediments to improving their case outcomes.
