Who is Sanjay Roy, the main accused in Kolkata rape and murder case

Sanjoy Roy, the prime suspect in the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata, reportedly had a history of violence against women, according to multiple sources. The 33-year-old is accused of sexually assaulting and murdering a second-year trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. CCTV footage captured Roy entering the hospital’s emergency building at 4 am on the day of the crime, wearing a Bluetooth device around his neck.

Approximately 40 minutes later, Roy was seen leaving the building, but the earphone was missing. Investigators later found the device near the victim’s body and discovered it was paired with Roy’s cellphone, directly linking him to the crime.

The post-mortem report confirmed that the 31-year-old doctor was sexually assaulted and murdered. The report revealed multiple injuries on her body, signs of a struggle, blood stains, scratch marks, and a broken collarbone.

Who is Sanjoy Roy?

Sanjoy Roy, who was arrested on August 10, is currently under 14-day judicial custody. He had been working as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police’s Disaster Management Group since 2019, according to reports. Later, he was transferred to the Police Welfare Cell and assigned to a police outpost at the hospital, which granted him access to various departments within the facility.

Sources revealed that Roy would often pretend to be an officer, wearing a Kolkata Police T-shirt, and used his connections to stay in barracks. He was allegedly involved in a racket within the hospital, extorting money from patients’ relatives by promising to secure them a bed.

Further investigations uncovered disturbing evidence on Roy’s mobile phone, which contained several violent and pornographic clips. He reportedly confessed to the crime without showing any remorse, telling the police, “If you want, you can hang me,” according to local media reports.

Neighbors of Roy have shared troubling details about his personal life, alleging that he had married multiple times, with three of his wives leaving him due to his abusive behavior. His fourth wife reportedly passed away from cancer last year. Those who knew Roy described him as a habitual offender with a consistent pattern of violence against women. Neighbors claimed he often returned home late at night, allegedly in a drunken state.

Despite the mounting evidence, Roy’s mother has defended her son, insisting that he is innocent and was framed for the crime. She alleged that Roy was coerced into confessing under police pressure. “My son is innocent. He has confessed to the crime under the pressure of police,” she told a private news outlet.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured that swift action would be taken in the case. She announced that if the police failed to resolve the case by Sunday, the investigation would be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
