14 perish in road accidents in Gilgit and Sukkur

CHILAS/SUKKUR: Tragic accidents in Chilas and Sukkur claimed the lives of 14 people, including women and children, with several more injured, authorities reported on Monday.

In Chilas, Gilgit Baltistan, six laborers perished when their vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a ditch. Police and GB Scouts swiftly responded to the scene, initiating a rescue operation that has so far retrieved two bodies from the wrecked Mazda.

Two other laborers sustained injuries in the incident near Hormaniyar and were transported to RHQ Hospital in Chilas for treatment. The injured were identified as Abdullah from Thor Barrogah and another individual from Dariyal, with the vehicle’s driver reported as Sajid Khan from Karorrah.

Meanwhile, in Sukkur, a severe collision between a speeding passenger bus and a trailer on the Sukkur Multan Motorway (M5) resulted in eight deaths and seven injuries. The accident occurred near Dring Malook in Ghotki, where the bus, traveling from Mansehra to Karachi, collided with a trailer. Police and Rangers conducted rescue operations, moving the injured to Tehsil Hospital in Ghotki. It was raining at the time, which may have contributed to the accident. The motorway police noted that the wet conditions likely played a role in the tragic event.

The deceased from the Sukkur accident include Noor Elahi, Shagufta, Rozina, Aneeba, and Hasanat, all from Mansehra. Identifying some victims has been complicated by the absence of immediate family members at the scene. The wreckage has since been cleared to a rest area in Ghotki.

In a separate incident in Liaquatpur near the Nonari settlement, a collision involving a parked oil tanker and a trailer resulted in four severe injuries.

Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed deep sorrow over the fatalities and conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased, praying for a swift recovery for the injured and resilience for the bereaved families.
