KP govt’s crackdown on unsafe food leads to large-scale disposal

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority recently conducted a significant disposal operation, eliminating a vast quantity of unsafe and substandard food items.

These items were seized during various operations throughout the Peshawar Division and included hazardous beverages, spices, China salt, tea leaves, snacks, ketchup, pickles, milk packs, and other consumables.

According to a spokesperson for the Food Authority, the operations led to the confiscation and subsequent disposal of notable quantities of unsafe food.

Among the items discarded were 202 bags of banned China salt valued at approximately Rs 3.64 million, 580 cartons of substandard juices, energy drinks, and packaged milk worth around Rs 400,000, and more than 3,400 kilograms of hazardous spices and wheat bran, valued at over Rs 2 million.

In addition, the operations uncovered 10,000 liters of counterfeit beverages, which were destroyed along with 1,000 kilograms of substandard pickles, all amounting to a significant market value.

Other unsafe items like tea leaves, snacks, ketchup, tomato sauce, coffee, biscuits, chocolates, cooking oil, and vinegar, collectively valued at Rs 350,000, were also disposed of.

The disposal process was overseen by Deputy Director Latif Rehman, along with Assistant Directors of Food Safety and Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Dr. Samiullah, under the direction of Director General Wasif Saeed. The operations were conducted in compliance with standard operating procedures at a designated dumping site managed by WSSP on Charsadda Road.
