Cyclone Asna spares major cities but leaves destruction and fatalities in its wake

KARACHI, QUETTA: Cyclone Asna, which narrowly missed Karachi and coastal areas of Balochistan, has now moved toward Oman. However, despite sparing major cities, the cyclone caused torrential rains and strong winds, leading to the death of seven people in Karachi.

Additionally, it resulted in three fatalities in the Qila Saifullah and Dukki areas of Balochistan, uprooting trees and electricity poles throughout the region.

In Sindh, including Karachi, while the rains have stopped, the aftermath persists. Numerous villages in Qambar are still flooded due to rainwater flowing from the Kirthar Mountains. The flood has washed away roads, making boats a necessary mode of transport for residents.

Despite the urgent need for assistance, no officials from the district administration have visited to assess the damage or start relief and rescue operations. Local residents have appealed to the provincial Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to take immediate action.

In Rojhan, located in southern Punjab, although the floodwaters have receded, the people displaced by the floods are still suffering.

Many have been forced to spend days and nights in the open by the side of the Indus Highway, with no aid received so far. The flood victims have lost their homes, crops, and possessions and are now facing a dire lack of food. They have called on Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take steps for their rehabilitation.

The Meteorological Office has issued another warning, predicting more rains across Sindh and Balochistan within the next 24 hours. Expected heavy showers in cities such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Kalat, Khuzdar, Jafarabad, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Barkhan, and Lasbela could lead to further flooding of streams and nullahs.
