Pak-EU reaffirm commitment to promote interfaith harmony and tackle extremism

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and the European Union have reaffirmed their commitment to jointly combat religious intolerance and work towards a peaceful future.

This pledge was made during a meeting between Special Envoy of the EU for the Promotion of Religion and Belief, Frans van Daele, and Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, on Wednesday.

The discussion focused on global concerns regarding religious intolerance, terrorism, sectarianism, and the promotion of peace and interfaith harmony.

Chaudhry Salik Hussain highlighted Pakistan’s dedication to protecting minority rights, noting that a comprehensive policy on interfaith harmony has been formulated and submitted to the Federal Cabinet for approval. He emphasized Pakistan’s resolve to promote religious tolerance.

“Over 700 scholars from various religions and sects have endorsed the Paigham-e-Pakistan document,” the minister said. “No individual is allowed to take the law into their own hands in the name of religion.”

Both parties reaffirmed their mutual commitment to strengthening cooperation between Pakistan and the EU to promote interfaith harmony and combat religious intolerance and extremism.

Frans van Daele was accompanied by EU Ambassador to Pakistan Dr. Riina Kionka.
